A few great tips on Decluttering from Cut The Clutter RVA!

I LOVE a clear workspace, my mind feels fresh and focused when my workspace is clear, so I can be my best for my clients! I was inspired to pass this along, I hope it is helpful!

According to Cut The Clutter RVA (their photo above), "You don’t need to be a professional organizer to transform your workspace into a calm, clutter-free zone where you can really get stuff done." Here's a simple step by step plan they suggest to get a "home office that is decluttered and organized, creating a space that’s calm, inviting, and perfect for productivity!" See below - paraphrased from Cut The Clutter RVA!

Step #1: Declutter first

We suggest decluttering your office to decide what you’re keeping and what needs to go. Then it will be easier to choose what sizes or types of containers, bins or baskets you need.

For the items that need to go, decide if they need to be rehomed elsewhere in the house, thrown away, recycled, shredded, donated, gifted to a loved one or sold. Make piles for each type of “go” item.

Step #2: Essential items only on your desk.

First things first, let’s clear off your desk. Keep only the essentials—your computer, a notepad, a pen holder and maybe a lamp. We think a family photo could be considered essential too! Otherwise, store items you don’t constantly use in your desk drawers or on shelves to keep your workspace clear and focused.

Step #3: Cable organizers. Cables can be a real eyesore and they seem to be everywhere! Use cable organizers or clips to bundle and hide cords.

Step #4: Sturdy file cabinet. A dedicated cabinet or file drawers within a pretty piece of furniture is your best friend for important documents. Label each folder clearly (think "Bills," "Medical," "Personal Docs") so you can find everything easily. Using color-coded folders will make identifying the categories even easier—both for filing away and finding later.

Step #5: Organize your Books and binders.

Shelves are perfect for storing books, binders, and even a few decorative items that make you happy. Arrange books by category or size to make them easy to find or put all like-colored books together to be visually appealing.

Step #6: Use Bins & Baskets

Decorative bins or baskets on your shelves keep smaller items organized and out of sight. Use labels to identify the contents of each bin and opt for matching baskets to create a cohesive look.

Spend 5-10 minutes at the end of each day tidying up your workspace. Put away papers and other supplies and clear your desk. Starting the next day with a clean slate feels amazing. Make it a habit to return items to their designated spots immediately after use, and there won’t be much for you to tidy up!
