1. Pay off as much debt as possible! Your debt to income ratio and your credit score are very significant factors in determining your mortgage interest rate as well as your qualifying amount. Make a monthly plan to pay down that debt and execute! 2. Save a 5-20% Downpayment. The more you can save for this step, the better. Also - remember that you will have a few expenses right after going under contract on your new home such as the Home inspection ($400-800), Appraisal ($500-800), and Earnest money deposit (usually 1% of the purchase price) - so you will want to have this cash easily accessible.

 

3. Start early! You may not think you are not ready yet or think if you start early you will be 'wasting our time' - that is not the case!
